Sunrise Garden News!

We are GRATEFUL for everyone who helped with our Fall Work Day last month! EXTRA THANKS to Alex, Katherine, Vivienne & Theo for taking on the task of building the new raised beds!! We also appreciate all the “big muscles” that helped shovel soil, paint the garden toolshed, & clear the area where we will soon have a shade structure for students participating in Garden Club!

This month, we are harvesting watermelon, cantaloupe, Piel de Sapo melon, eggplant, cucumbers, peppers, herbs, green beans, tomatoes, kale, lettuce, bok choy, & okra! Students are learning about the purpose of succession planting, how deep to plant different seeds, how to properly transplant seedlings, how to prune plants, and what essential nutrients vegetables need to grow.

In October, we are planting beets, carrots, kale, jicama, cabbage, collard greens, mustard greens, broccoli, brussel sprouts, lettuce, onions, potatoes, wildflowers, radishes, fava beans, celery, & cilantro! Our grape vines, apple tree, hibiscus & lemon tree are all continuing to grow, and we see the first figs budding out on our fig tree in the olla bed.

Students are excited about adding a “Chinese immersion” and “Spanish immersion” element to the garden this fall by labeling traditional Chinese & Mexican vegetable crops in our garden with Mandarin & Spanish signs.

For more information about garden activities or to volunteer for Garden Club on Tuesdays 11-1, email or text Nkechi, our FFO Garden Coordinator: nkechidiallo@gmail.com (509)879-7639
