Spirit of Sunrise

The Sunrise Drive FFO is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and much of the FFO budget comes from direct donations. If you have not had a chance to make your Spirit of Sunrise donation, please make your tax deductible donation now!

The money you share makes many extra curricular possibilities available to our students!

Spirit of Sunrise donations help fund field trips, Spiders and Cider, Sunrise community garden, extra classroom supplies, and many more events and activities for our students. To see how the Spirit of Sunrise donations were recently utilized, please see the Treasury Update and Grants at Work sections of the digest

You can make a donation through sunriseffo.org/donate or drop a check payable to “Sunrise Drive FFO” in the FFO lock box located in the school office. The suggested amount is fifty dollars ($50) per student; however, any amount is appreciated and all donations are tax deductible. Thank you!

Treasury Update

FFO sponsored programs for our students desperately need financial help

Our bank account is being whittled away due to increasing costs to renew the excellent classroom technologies, revitalize classroom equipment, and maintain annual programs.

Field trips for the grade levels, and grant budgets for teachers remain are our main priorities, but we need your help to make sure enough funds are available.

Please throw your support into the upcoming Mathathon or an extra direct donation via the Spirit of Sunrise.

With your tax deductible contributions, the FFO can continue making Sunrise shine!

– Dayna Anderson, Co-Treasurer

Grants at Work!

The FFO grants program presents an important opportunity for staff and parents to work together to benefit the entire Sunrise community. By using FFO funds, we can expand Sunrise’s ability to meet specific educational needs of our children by paying for field trips, artists-in-residence, guest authors, the Sunrise Garden, and numerous other special programs for our students.

Teachers, staff, family members and students may submit grant proposals to the Grants Chair who presents them to the FFO executive board for review. Exec-approved proposals are brought to the General FFO Meetings for discussion and a deciding vote.

Approved Grants

  • International Wildlife Museum Field Trip, Kindergarten, $650

Proposed Grants

  • Playground Equipment for Kindergarten Playground, Kindergarten, $450

For more information, go to sunriseffo/grants or contact us at grants@sunriseffo.org!

– Margaret Barber, Grants Chair

Mathathon is one of the largest fundraisers for our FFO and helps fund things like our class field trips, the community garden, our Science Fair, Artists-in-residence, our 5th grade legacy project, and much more!

Last week, your child should have brought home a packet about Mathathon. We urge you to look through it and help your child to contact friends and family to make pledges. We are trying for 100% participation this year, and every child who turns in a pledge will receive a thank you gift AND be entered to win our Grand Prize, regardless of the amount. Mathathon is all about making math fun!

We are taking pledges 100% online! We have set up a school site on PledgeStar.com. It is super easy to use! Your student can email or text the link to family and friends. Payments are also made online, so no collecting cash or chasing money. The website is set up so that anyone committing a per-problem pledge will not have to pay until after the Mathathon is complete and the students’ scores have been recorded. Flat-amount pledges will be collected immediately. Please see the instruction sheet that went home with your child for more details.

Mathathon timetable:

  • Now - Start collecting pledges at pledgestar.com/sunrisedrive
  • Now - Use the practice test in the packet – the more practice the better!
  • 3/12 - All Per Problem Pledges must be received. Flat pledges can still be made after this date.
  • 3/13 - Test day – remember, math is fun!
  • 3/26 - All pledges must be completed online. Any money paid after this date will not be included in the calculation of prizes (though, of course, it will be accepted).

To volunteer, please sign up through MySchoolAnywhere! We need lots of help, especially some folks who can walk around during lunch/recess periods in the Dr. Math Lab Coat to quiz kids and give them stickers. (It’s fun!!! The kids love it!)

We’ll also need help to decorate the school and lots of volunteers on the test day (March 13) to make Mathathon a success! Thanks for your support!

Steppers Fun Run

Friday, March 2nd, 11AM - 1:10PM

Have you seen the cool shoe tokens your child has earned at Sunrise Steppers??? Each token represents a mile of running or walking around the big field. Together, students and teachers have run approximately 5,000 miles this school year - a long distance for little legs!

To recognize and reward their dedication, we'll be holding a special Steppers Fun Run on Friday, March 2nd on the Big Field behind the playgrounds.

Family members are welcome to attend the entire celebration, but here is a list of times when each grade will be on the field:

  • 11:00 to 11:25 - Kindergarten
  • 11:30 to 11:50 - 2nd Grade
  • 11:50 to 12:10 - 1st Grade
  • 12:10 to 12:30 - 3rd Grade
  • 12:30 to 12:50 - 5th Grade
  • 12:50 to 1:10 - 4th Grade

Energetic employees from the Nike and Converse stores will be helping us make this event super fun for the kids, but we also need a few additional volunteers. Please consider signing up through MySchoolAnywhere to make this event super special for all our super runners!

One of the events is the Shoe Box Shuffle — weneed your empty shoe boxes for the kids to run in. If you have cardboard shoe boxes, please bring them into the office for Ms. Dover!

Visit sunriseffo.org/steppers for more info, or send me an email!

For judging purposes, projects must be registered by March 1, 2018

Projects are displayed and judged March 12-14, and Sunrise hosts a Science Inquiry Day on March 15, where real scientists spend the day engaging our students in amazing science activities! Past participants have included The Physics Bus, Compost Cats, U of A Geologists and Astronomers, Biosphere, and more!

Important Dates:

  • Project Registration Deadline: March 1, 2018
  • Science Fair: Mar 12-14
  • Science Inquiry Day : Mar 15
  • Science Fair Winners Announced - winners will proceed to SARSEF!

We are always looking for Science Inquiry Day presenters to help make it a success. If you, or someone you know, works in a STEM related field and is interested in presenting to a group of students, please reach through the Volunteer & Visiting Scientist Form or contact me directly.

Remember, if your child is interested in doing a Science Fair Project we just need a simple registration form submitted by March 1st with a working project title.

It’s never too early to get started with science!

Get more info and register online at sunriseffo.org/science. If you are interested in helping in any way, please contact me.

Yearbooks are coming at the end of the school year!  We need your photos!  Please submit photos taken at Sunrise events via sunriseffo.org/yearbook. They are $30, please make a check to Sunrise FFO and submit it in the dropbox at school. 5th Grade Photos & Legacy Art Project

5th Grade promotion is coming up fast and we need your help! On Wednesday, May, 23rd there will be an on-campus promotion ceremony, breakfast afterward, and a celebration later in the day.

Even though promotion is a few months away, Ms. Carton needs your help with the 5th-grade Legacy Art Project. The Legacy Art Project is a time-honored tradition here at Sunrise, some of you may even have created a Legacy Art Project of your own! If you’d like to help out, please sign up using your custom MySchoolAnywhere link:

Signup with your special link: [Signups_Text_Link]

If you have any photos of your 5th grader over the years at Sunrise, submit them for the slide show on graduation day! It’s a fun time for them to relive their memories at Sunrise before moving on to Middle School. You can upload photos at sunriseffo.org/promotion. Photos must be of the students on the Sunrise campus or at a school event.

LEGO Robotics at State

Our 5th Grade LEGO Robotics First LEGO League Team went to the State Robotics Competition at Arizona State University on Jan 14th. They placed approximately 12th out of 45 other teams, including high school competitors from around the State of Arizona.  We are so proud of their efforts and team spirit!

Stay Well This Flu Season

The Flu is sweeping the nation, but here are some tips to try and help prevent it:

1. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth, according to the CDC. Wash your hands frequently.

2. Clean your electronics. Disinfect surfaces that you touch frequently, which become a hotbed for germs. Disinfect your keyboard, cell phone, tablets, home phone, desk, door knobs and other surfaces you touch often. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

3. Strengthen your immune system. Adopting good habits will go a long way in helping your body fight off germs, according to a Harvard Medical School article:

"Every part of your body, including your immune system, functions better when protected from environmental assaults and bolstered by healthy-living strategies," Harvard medical officials found. Healthy steps to build your immune system include:

  • Eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables, cut back on sugar and processed foods.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Get adequate sleep. 7-8 hours a night for adults, 9-12 hours per 24 hours on a regular basis to promote optimal health for children ages 6-12 according the American Academy of Pediatrics.
  • Take steps to avoid infection, such as washing your hands frequently and not being around infected people.
  • Try to minimize stress.
Box Tops

Thank you to all the parents and students who turned in Box Tops to your teachers and staff! With everyone’s efforts Sunrise Drive Elementary raised $622.60 for our Fall 2017 submission. Way to go! Thank you Andee Coppel for your help in trimming the Box Tops. Please continue to submit your Box Tops as we collect them all throughout the school year. Our next submission will be March 1st. So please get those Box Tops in by Monday, February 19th.

If anyone is interested in being the Box Tops Chair for the upcoming school year (2018-2019), please email me. It’s a super easy way to get money for our school and something that can be worked on from home.
